February 20, 2025

The Honorable Michael Kratsios
Acting Director, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy
1650 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, D.C. 20502

Dear Mr. Kratsios,

On behalf of the American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 (ACS), I would like to congratulate you on your nomination as Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP). Your leadership offers an opportunity to ensure science effectively contributes to the advancement of American prosperity, global competitiveness, and innovation. Representing over 200,000 individuals, including chemists, chemical engineers, and science educators, in our global community, ACS is committed to working with OSTP to address the challenges in these important areas as we drive towards our vision of a world built on science.

Science, particularly chemistry and the physical sciences with chemistry at its core, plays a pivotal role in economic and national strength. Investments in research and development (R&D) have historically contributed significantly to U.S. GDP growth and the creation of high-skill, high-wage jobs. As a leader in supporting the global chemistry enterprise, ACS is eager to collaborate on ensuring American science continues to be a competitive advantage in driving innovation, improving quality of life, and supporting economic growth.

To that end, we would welcome discussion on collaboration in the following areas:

  1. Strengthening inclusive STEM Education and Workforce Development: Enhancing STEM education from K-12 through advanced research training and reviewing workforce policies to attract top scientific talent.
  2. Enhancing Business and Innovation Ecosystems: Promoting business growth, reducing regulatory burdens, and protecting intellectual property to foster scientific breakthroughs and commercial success.
  3. Increasing Investment in Research and Development (R&D): Prioritizing federal R&D funding to support interdisciplinary collaboration and translate ideas into solutions.
  4. Scientific Integrity and Data Accessibility: Upholding evidence-based policymaking and ensuring scientific data integrity to bolster public trust and global respect for American scientific leadership.

ACS is already working to leverage our resources, expertise, and advocacy to help address these priorities. We would like to work together with the Administration to foster a scientific enterprise that reflects the ingenuity and determination of the American people.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss potential areas of collaboration. If you would like more information or to set up a conversation, please feel free to contact me directly at a_horvath@acs.org.

Sincerely,

Albert G. Horvath
ACS Chief Executive Officer
