Innovation is a vital source of economic growth, and technology transfer from public research to private development is a proven route for commercializing new products. Historically, the U.S. government’s laboratories have incubated many significant discoveries as part of larger research efforts such as the Manhattan Project and the Human Genome Project. These past successes offer insights to current technology transfer efforts. How can we best nurture innovation in order to seed economic growth? What lessons can be learned regarding management styles from government-operated vs. company-operated laboratories? This panel will discuss efforts to optimize technology transfer from federal labs to ensure a sound return on public investment and creation of a robust national economy.
