WASHINGTON, Dec.10, 2015 鈥� The American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 (ACS) praises Congress and the president for voting the into law. The bill, which provides for the long overdue reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), is a testament to the benefits of compromise and community engagement.听
ACS supported the legislation because it contains provisions to strengthen teaching of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). 鈥淚n today's economy, well-educated scientists and engineers drive the technology development that allows the United States to maintain its competitive edge in the global marketplace and improve the well-being of citizens worldwide,鈥� says ACS President Diane Grob Schmidt. 鈥淭o prepare current and future students with the necessary skills to address rapidly evolving technology, improvement to all levels of STEM education is critical.鈥�
Under this legislation:
- States will continue to be required to establish and maintain math and science standards intended to ensure that students are ready for college and careers
- Statewide assessment of students鈥� knowledge will continue, with science testing taking place three times between grades 3 and 12, and math and reading testing taking place annually between grades 3 and 8, as well as once in high school
- States and districts will be able to obtain funding to provide professional development and other comprehensive systems of support for teachers, principals or other school leaders to promote high-quality instruction and leadership in STEM subjects.
