Senator Coons talks sustainability at Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference in July

WASHINGTON, July 6, 2015 鈥揝enator Chris Coons (D-Delaware) is demonstrating his support of Green Chemistry by speaking at the 19th Annual Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference July 14-16 in North Bethesda, Maryland.

He and Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced a bipartisan bill to encourage innovation in the field of sustainable chemistry called 鈥淭he Sustainable Chemistry Research and Development Act () of 2015鈥� (S. 1447).聽 The SCRDA will encourage the design, development, and commercialization of high-performing chemicals, products, and processes that reduce or eliminate risk to human health and benefit the environment,鈥� stated Coons.

According to , the senator also made related initiatives a priority: financing clean energy projects, supporting innovative research and basic science, investing in renewable energy solutions, developing next generation biofuels and supporting alternative vehicles. Senator Coons will have an attentive audience of more than 450 scientists, industry and academic leaders coming to the conference to share innovative research and discuss chemistry of the future.

Senator Coons is a graduate of Amherst College with a B.A. in chemistry and political science, has a Master鈥檚 in ethics from Yale Divinity School, and a law degree from Yale Law School. He will be a keynote speaker at the on Tuesday, July 14, at 11:45 a.m. at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, North Bethesda, Maryland.

The Green Chemistry and Engineering Conference is the oldest green chemistry conference in the world featuring three days of full programming on a wide array of topics, including greener chemistry transformations, use of renewable feedstocks, enlisting biology to solve chemical problems and manufacture of more sustainable consumer products. This year鈥檚 keynote speakers on innovative research include Francis Arnold (California Institute of Technology), Angela Belcher (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), and Deborah Mielewski (Ford Motor Co), with special remarks from Senator Coons.
