ACS GCI Formulators Roundtable publishes innovative research on opportunities for greener alternatives in chemical formulations

WASHINGTON, June 8, 2015 鈥 The increasingly sustainability-minded consumer has been demanding greener formulated products for everything from cleaning to cosmetics, and the American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 Green Chemistry Institute庐 (ACS GCI) Formulators鈥 Roundtable is helping to identify what鈥檚 needed to make this happen. The Roundtable recently published a paper identifying 10 specific opportunities for the development of more sustainable chemicals used in formulated products.聽聽聽

Every ingredient in a product is chosen for the performance benefit it provides, and formulators are always looking for alternatives that have a reduced risk of harmful effects on the environment, people and animals. However, these replacements must perform as well as, or better than, the ingredients they replace at a competitive cost to ensure the alternatives are worth the switch.

鈥淎cademic researchers can help industry make its operations and products greener, but only if the academics know what is needed,鈥 said Philip Jessop, the lead writer of the publication. 鈥淭his research will give guidance for choosing greener alternatives to encourage the incorporation of changes that will benefit not only the entire value chain from manufacturing to consumer, but the environment as well.鈥 The roundtable hopes this paper will be a good step forward for industry and academia to collaborate toward greener formulations and ultimately a greener society.

The GCI Formulators Roundtable is a partnership between ACS GCI and 11 companies in the formulated products industry designed to be the driving force for the use of green chemistry in creating innovative products that are environmentally sustainable throughout the entire product life cycle.
