鈥楬eroes of Chemistry鈥 improve people鈥檚 lives through the transforming power of chemistry
WASHINGTON, May 9, 2017 鈥 Scientists who developed products that have led to significant advancements in human health, technology, the food supply, and the environment, will be inducted into a scientific 鈥淗all of Fame鈥 later this summer, becoming the newest Heroes of Chemistry, an honor bestowed by the American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 (ACS), the world鈥檚 largest scientific society.
鈥淭hrough the 2017 ACS Heroes of Chemistry program, we are honoring scientists from Bristol-Myers Squibb, Corning, Dow Chemical, DuPont Crop Protection, Genentech, and Merck whose risk-taking and drive to innovate have contributed to the advancement of the human condition,鈥 says Allison Campbell, ACS president. 鈥淭heir creative spirit, commitment to excellence, and technical talent are tangible evidence of the ACS Vision: 鈥淚mproving people鈥檚 lives through the transforming power of chemistry.鈥
The Heroes of Chemistry program recognizes scientists whose innovative work in chemistry and chemical engineering led to commercial products that benefit the world. The teams will be recognized in a ceremony on Sunday, Aug. 20, during the 中国365bet中文官网鈥檚 254th National Meeting & Exposition in Washington, D.C.
The following scientific teams will be honored:
- Bristol-Myers Squibb: Pioneered the development of direct acting antiviral agents that have produced hepatitis C cure rates of greater than 95 percent.
- Corning Incorporated: : Invented ClearCurve庐 optical fiber, a revolutionary product which allows cabled optical fiber to be bent around very tight corners with significantly less signal loss than with traditional fibers.
- DuPont Crop Protection:聽 Discovered DuPont鈩 Zorvec鈩, the first member of a novel class of fungicides to control diseases caused by oomycete pathogens.聽聽聽聽聽 聽
- Genentech: Discovered and developed ERIVEDGE庐 (vismodegib), the first medicine to be approved for the treatment of metastatic or locally advanced basal cell carcinoma.
- Merck: 聽Developed ZEPATIER庐, a prescription medicine to treat chronic hepatitis C infection in adults.
- The Dow Chemical Company: Developed AVANSE鈩 acrylic resins and EVOQUE鈩 pre-composite polymers to help make architectural paints greener and more economical.
