The naturally occurring ubiquinones are benzoquinone derivatives with 6鈥10聽trans-isoprene units. They are more commonly referred to as the Q coenzymes. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is present in the mitochondria of most eukaryotic cells and is involved in electron transport and cell respiration. Cholesterol-reducing statins deplete the body鈥檚 CoQ10, and many statin users take 100 mg or more CoQ10 per day as a nutritional supplement. Some physicians recommend taking the reduced form, ubiquinol, because it may be absorbed by the body better than ubiquinone.
