Cortistatin A is a steroid that can be isolated from the marine sponge聽Corticium simplex. It has been shown to block angiogenesis, or new blood vessel growth, and therefore it may be useful for treating macular degeneration. However, its availability鈥攂oth from natural sources and synthesis鈥攊s limited.聽, coristatin A analogues have shown efficacy in animal testing.
