Employment Non-Discrimination
ACS Position Statement:
The American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 (ACS) is concerned about the lack of employment security for scientists and engineers who are members of sexual and gender minorities, and in a larger context, for all workers. ACS has reviewed the subject, formulated this policy statement, and supports the following principles:
- ACS believes that employment should be free of discrimination based upon an individual鈥檚 perceived or actual sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, transgender status, gender non-conforming status, or intersex status.听
- Employment decisions including recruitment, testing, hiring, firing, promotions, compensation, job advertisements, training, apprenticeship, retirement plans, disability leave, and other terms and conditions of employment should be based upon the job requirements and an individual鈥檚 objective performance and qualifications.听
- Disclosure of a person鈥檚 gender identity or sexual orientation to an employer is solely at the discretion of the individual.听

It is encouraging that a number of employers in the chemical and allied industries and at public and private educational institutions have and continue to include sexual orientation, gender expression, and gender identity in their anti-discrimination policies. Employers with fifteen (15) or more employees are prohibited under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act from discriminating based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Unfortunately, for individuals working for employers with fewer than 15 total employees, gender expression and identity remain unprotected in the workplace. Hence, there are professionals and working people being denied employment because of something that has no relationship to their ability to perform their work.

Coverage
ACS supports employment security protections currently provided for sexual minorities based on sexual orientation, gender expression, and gender identity. Employers of all sizes and total employees should consider extending fair employment practices to all sexual minorities.听听
