from ACS Approved Institutions 2023-24
听
Comparing degrees/program to national data, 2016-2024
Number of bachelor's degrees conferred
17,899 bachelor's degrees were conferred from 657 approved programs.
9,728 bachelor's degrees in chemistry
8,171 bachelor's degrees in biochemistry
27 graduates/program
35% earn certified bachelor's degrees
The graph shows the comparison of number of bachelors degrees conferred per program, ACS data vs. national data. Note that prior to 2019 ACS programs reported all degrees conferred, including biochemistry degrees. National data includes only chemistry degrees; data from 2024 currently unavailable.

Gender distribution: Bachelor's degree recipients, 2014 to 2024
听
Gender distribution for bachelor's degree recipients from 2014-15 to 2023-24 academic years. Data were gathered from annual reports and are from ACS approved institutions only (n ranges from 600 to 700 approved programs per year). Data on non-binary identities have only been collected since 2019-2020 and are not included in this figure for clarity. Since the 2016-17 academic year, the data show more women earning degrees in chemistry than men, with that gap appearing to broaded in the ensuing years.

Gender distribution for doctoral degrees conferred in 2023-24
听
More men earned doctoral degrees (55%) than women (44%) in 2023-24. Note that 1% of the degrees were earned by individuals that identify as nonbinary. Data collected from ACS Approved program annual reports.
听
Doctoral degree recipients from ACS Approved Programs Changes in gender distribution over the last decade.
听
听
Over the last decade, the percentage of men earning doctoral degrees appears to be decreasing, while the percentage of women earning doctoral degrees is increasing. There is still a larger percentage of men receiving Ph.D.s in chemistry, but the gap between men and women appears to be decreasing.
