Long term excellence in undergraduate chemistry education relies on a substantial institutional commitment to support the instructional needs and听interests of the faculty and students. The following requirements reflect the institutional and programmatic attributes that support and maintain听excellence in chemistry education.
Critical Requirements
Institutions must:
- Have the ability and will to make a听financial commitment to the听program at a level commensurate听with the resources of the institution听and its educational mission.
- Provide sustainability through听inevitable changes in faculty,听leadership, and funding levels.
Programs must:
- Be accredited by a regional accreditation body.
- Graduate an average of 2 students per year over a six year period.
- Have reasonable influence over
- Budget,
- Faculty selection,
- Tenure & promotion,
- Curriculum development, and
- Teaching assignments.
Normal Expectations
Programs should normally:听听
- Be organized as an independent unit.
- Have sufficient breadth to offer a range of educational experiences.
- Have both academic and non-academic staff and resources that provide
- Administrative support services,
- Administration of stockrooms and teaching assistants, and
- Instrument and equipment maintenance.
- Be able to ensure that equipment and supplies needed for modern laboratory instruction are available.
- Ensure that students and faculty have access to modern chemical information resources.
- Have regular institutional support for maintaining and upgrading institutional technology.听
- Provide regular support for the professional development of all faculty, including instructional and tenure-track faculty.听
- Provide regular support for faculty and student travel to professional meetings.
- Have access to regularized resources for capital equipment acquisition and replacement.
