About the Guidelines
The ACS Committee on Professional Training (CPT) establishes guidelines for the approval of bachelor degree programs in chemistry. The requirements for program approval and student certification are described in the newly approved 2023 ACS Guidelines and Evaluation Procedures for Bachelor鈥檚 Degree Programs (PDF).
ACS recognizes the changing landscape of higher education as well as the diversity of institutions and students that embody the chemical enterprise. Thus, these guidelines provide approved programs with opportunities to develop chemistry degree tracks that are appropriate to the educational missions of their institutions.
The guidelines are organized into sections. Each section groups the guidelines into three categories: critical requirements for approval, normal expectations, and markers of excellence. These indicators are not meant to be prescriptive or an all-inclusive checklist but represent the values of the American Chemical 中国365bet中文官网 and its vision for continued excellence in chemistry education.听
- Critical Requirements: Departments/programs must meet these requirements to obtain or maintain ACS approval.听
- Normal Expectations: Guidelines in this category reflect the expected values and activities of an ACS approved program.听
- Markers of Excellence: The guidelines in this category reflect departmental and institutional practices characteristic of an exemplary chemistry program that supports innovation and inclusive education.听
Certifying Students
Once a program has been approved by ACS, the department has the authority to certify that students have completed the approved curriculum.听听
Departments should be aware that once a program receives ACS approval, they can add additional tracks and certify students as long as these tracks meet the overall requirements for an ACS approved bachelor鈥檚 degree.听
When departments consider adding or managing existing tracks, it is best practice to clearly communicate to students, ideally through official channels such as written guidelines, course checklists, the department's website, which classes they need to take in order to earn an certified bachelor鈥檚 degree through any track.听
It is the responsibility of the department chairperson to determine which of their graduates have met the requirements for the certified degree.听Students that earn a certified degree must take a course of study that provides:
- Five foundation courses听that span ABIOP (Analytical, Biochemistry, Inorganic, Organic, Physical)
- A minumum of听four in-depth courses, which may include research
- 颁辞尘辫濒别迟别听350 lab hours听beyond general chemistry
- Coverage of the preparation, characterization, and physical properties听of at least two of the following:
- Synthetic polymers
- Biological macromolecules
- 听Supramolecular aggregates
- Meso- or nanoscale materials
- Courses that include the development of Professional Competencies and Lab Skills.听
The goal of certification is to provide students a competitive advantage for their future employment with an externally validated course of study that is standardized across a wide variety of institutions and programs.听听

Maintaining Approval
Approved programs must submit scheduled annual and periodic reports. Repeatedly听failing to submit听reports may jeopardize a program鈥檚 standing with the ACS Approval Program. For more information, please email us at听cpt@acs.org.
